Dave's Dancin' PageMe and DancingI have always enjoyed all kinds of dancing. If my ears can hear a beat, my feet just want to move to it! While I love all types of dancing, most of my time is spent with Country and Western, and particularly Western Square Dancing. Square Dancing! I bet when you hear those words, all you can think about it the stuff you learned to do in school Gym Class, or you picture some hill billies stomping to fiddle music in a barn. Modern Square Dancing is nothing like that. Its done to all types of modern music, in all types of places, AND in just about all countries of the world. I dance with several clubs, both in Richmond, and in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area. I belong to the Riptides, in Virginia Beach, and Im a member of Single Square Dancers U.S.A., a national organization. When Im not dancing locally, I like to travel to special dances around the country. Check out my Calendar of picks for this year and next, some that Ill be at, and others that I wish I could make. I was introduced to Square Dancing while I was in High School. A friend invited me over to his house for a party and a bunch of the teens there were already dancers. They showed me how, and the next thing I knew I was organizing a teenage Square Dance club called The Churchmice (we danced in an old Presbyterian Church), in Swarthmore, Pa. I know some of that original group are still dancing, and at least one, Betsy Gotta, is still calling. From there the Navy took me to Norfolk, and I've danced with several clubs in that area since then, including the Riptides. The Riptides have been dancing in the Tidewater area since 1963. I first discovered them a few years after that, when the Navy moved me to Norfolk. 1998 will be the Riptides 35th Anniversary year. Many special dances and events are planned. Check out the Riptides Web Page for more info on them, and the club calendar. SSDUSA, or Single Square Dancers U.S.A., is a national organization of Single Dancers, and clubs that support the singles. Their main event of the year is the Dance-A-Rama, held on Labor Day Weekend. This dance is also called the Singles National, and brings together around 1000 single dancers. Dancing usually begins on Thursday evening, and runs all day Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Each year the dance is held in a different city, with Nashville scheduled for 1997 and Minneapolis for 1998.
